When they next meet at a party, Bo b and Mi c deny that the y have any feel ings for one another - a d eclaratio n that soon leads to tragedy.. . Marce l Carné i s widely re garded as one of the sta ndard bearers of French qual ity cinema of the 1930s and 1940s, respons ible for such masterp ieces a s Quai d es brumes (1938) and Les Enfants du Paradis (1945 ). How iro nic then t hat, in 1958, towa rds the e nd of his film- making caree r, he s hould make a film w hich dare d to po rtray the at titudes and behaviou r of the 1 950s youth , in a way tha t effecti vely capt ures the m ood and sentiment of t he time. Les Tricheurs was a hugely contro versial film, not le ast because o f its blatant depiction of adoles cent free-lo ve, and was even banne d in som e region s of France. It also receive d some int ensely un favoura ble revi ews, m ost notably fr om the youn g hothe ads on the Cah iers du cinéma such as Fran ?ois Tr uffaut who cite d this fil m as a pr ime example of the dec line of French cinema into m ediocrity. In s pite of all t his negat ive press, th e film p roved to b e an as tonishing comme rcial succes s, attracting five milli on cinem a-goers, and was awarde d the Grand Prix du Cinéma fran?a is in 1958. W hilst Les Tr icheurs i s not as flawless as Car né& #39;s e arlier masterpieces, it is non etheless a sign ificant work , having t he power to bot h shock and m ove its audienc e, whilst having gr eat entert ainment value. It evokes the mood of its time in a way that few French films of t his period d id, depi cting you ng people as pleasure -seeking rebels, rej ecting the a usterity and discipline of the p revious gen eration whi lst pursuing a life without c ares, respo nsibilities or love. Sim ilarities with James Dean& amp;#39; s films o f the 1 950s (most no tably Rebel without a Ca use) are a pparent, alth ough Carné& amp;#39;s tr eatment of young people is far mor e abstr act - i n his fil m they merely s ymbolise a wo rld that ha s lost i ts way, more or less vi ctims of post-war prosp erity. A lthough t he young people in Les T richeurs lack the authe nticity to be totally c redible , the film do es make an impo rtant, a nd inde ed quite distu rbing point, about where the permissiv e society m ay be hea ding. Mu ch of the pleas ure of the fi lm is in the p erformances f rom its fou r lead actors, Jacques Charrie r, Pasc ale Petit, Lau rent Te rzieff and Andréa Pa risy, although only Terzief f is really co nvincing in h is role. Marc el Carné o riginally cons idered Alain D elon and Jean-P aul Belmon do for the part s of Bob and Alai n respe ctively, before opt ing for C harrier and Terzieff . As a consolat ion, Carn é offered Belm ondo a smaller part in the film - a las too sm all for the actor to b e noticed by th e public. Belmo ndo& #39;s br eakthrough had to wai t until the following y ear whe n he sta rred in Jean-L uc Godard&a mp;#39;s re volutionary A bout de so uffle, a film which offers a very different p erspective of t he youth gene ration.詳情
