Zac is a tee nage boy who decid es to ca mp on Mako Island, unaware that three mermai ds, Si rena, Nix ie and Lyla, who are guardia ns of the i sland, ar e watching h im. That nig ht, when the full moon rises, t he boy comes in to contact w ith the magic w ater of t he Moon Pool. The following morning, Zac wakes up disco vering he has b ecome a merman with a fish-li ke tail and the ability to control and manipulate water. His new -found merman abilities will cause problem s for the me rmaids.
