Later, in the refrac ted light of f alling apple blossoms in the wine-gar den--scene s of a distil led, ether eal beauty--Nic ki gradually wins her faith and lo ve. Mean while, amid st the sump tuous and corrupt milie u of th e family pal ace, N icki is drawn into co mplicity agains t his wil l, as his uns crupulous m other infor ms him he must marry Cecel ia, the daught er of a wea lthy commoner, in order to revive the family fortune.
