The histor y of Da nish country church archi tecture is told by showing scenes of how the church was used by the congregation, beginning w ith the cel ebratio n of mass in a small a nd simple wooden church 800 years ago, a nd ending with the co ngregation singing in a vil lage church of to-day. The develop ment and the growth of the pattern of church arch itecture is show n. Dreyer in this fil m shows a seri es of churc hes from d ifferent periods with churchg oers in perio d clothin g. Each p eriod is sep arated by a s hot of a chu rch bell do uble-exposed on the sky . Although the film has a vib rant and instructive way of communic ating th e differen t epochs and styles to students, it does no t exhibit t he artistic qu ality that usually distinguishes a Dreyer film, e xcept perhaps i n some o f the cost umes, wh ich were origina lly made for Day of Wr ath. The board of Dansk Kultu rfilm in aut umn 1945 decided that their planned church f ilm would ex clusive ly be about village churc hes. Drey er would rework the script that wa s written b y editor and f olk high-s chool princ ipal Bernhar d Jensen, ai ded by a commit tee of experts con sisting of architect H. L? nborg-Jensen a nd Victor Hermansen, cu rator at t he National Museum of Denmark. D reyer had a fir st draft ready in mid-Marc h, entit led Kir ken er et gammelt Hus (& amp;quot;Th e Church Is an Old Hous e"), which was d istributed to t he members of the committee fo r their comments. In the last hal f of July, Dr eyer and Vict or Hermans en travel led the cou ntry to loo k at suitable churche s. They resear ched the d etails and at D reyer’s r equest a number of tec hnical c hanges were made to the churches, incl uding the remo val of porcelai n holders for e lectrical wiring in Tvej e Merl?se Church. O n 4 July, Dre yer went in a dvance to Ri ngk?bing. Sho oting was s et to start a few days later with the arrival o f the direc tor of photograp hy, Preben Fr ank, who had f allen off a l adder and broke n his leg, Fo rtunately, he was ready t o cautiou sly start working aga in withi n a few days , with hi s leg in a ca st. Otherwi se, the produ ction w ent withou t a glitch. Everywhere, D reyer said, they were w ell received a t the vi carages and they had no prob lem getti ng enough ex tras. On 1 au gust, they ret urned t o Copenhagen wi th almost all t heir foo tage in the can . They only n eeded to film t he chur ch in Sk elby, where th e weather had been against t hem, plus a Swedish w ooden c hurch in Heda red. The ec onomy was distressed so soon after the war, especially w hen it ca me to fore ign curr ency, bu t there were no real wooden ch urches left in Denmark and building an i nterior set in the stu dio would b e too expensive . The finishe d film wa s shown for th e first time on 24 Sep tember 1 947 to a small , closed c ircle, which included th e Minister for Ecclesiasti cal Aff airs. In Decembe r 1947, as was Dansk Ku lturfilm’s stan dard practic e, the fi lm was pres ented to the press, p oliticians a nd others on a programme with four o ther short films.詳情
