Beginning just after the bloody Sioux victory over General Custer at Little Big Horn, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee intertwines the perspectives of three characters: Charle s Eastm an (Beach) , né Ohi yesa, a young, Dartm outh-educated, Sioux docto r held up as l iving proo f of the alleged success of as similatio n; Sitti ng Bull (Sch ellenberg ), the pr oud Lakota ch ief who refuses t o submit to U.S . government policies desi gned to st rip his people of their id entity, thei r dignity and t heir sacred lan d – the g old-lad en Black Hills of the Dakota s; and Senator Henry Dawes (Qu inn), who wa s one of the architects of the gover nment policy o n Indian affai rs.
