Marg Duff ield (L ee Remick) is t he Maine wife o f Al (Josep h Somme r) whos e daughter Peg (Marlee M atlin) is deaf. Peg &#3 9;s husband is killed in a car accident o n the way to v isit th e Maine ho use, and th e Duffield& amp;#39;s take in Peg&#3 9;s six year o ld daughter, Lisa, whil e Peg rec overs. Since Lisa is a sp eaking child, Marg t hinks o f her the w ay she wanted Peg to b e, and seeks guardian custody. Remi ck&#39 ;s role is sec ondary to Matli n's , though she is presente d as a tr agic figure, particularl y as Al r efuses to help her pl an to g ain Lisa. Peg&#39 ;s deafnes s is said to be from a childh ood case of s pinal meningi tis, and the teleplay b y Louisa Bu rns-Biso gno, with s tory by Louisa and Tom Bisogno, re duces Rem ick to a textb ook mot her who is self-hati ng from guilt and there fore canno t love her own daughter. I n a memorabl e scene, P eg angril y signs h er exit to Ma rg, since M arg has refuse d to lea rn sign l anguage, thoug h Peg has le arned to spea k for he r mother. The treatment uses the Tennesee W illiams play, The Glass Me nagerie, for therapy, to help P eg overcome her grief and also Marg `lose h er unic orn horn& #39; and e mbrace her da ughter. Whi lst Peg ch oosing to act in this play may see m an odd choice for so meone grieving, what is more notic able is that Matli n is far too more glam ourous to b e believab le as Laura . The Bisogno& amp;#39;s in clude Michael O &#39 ;Keefe as Da n, Peg&# 39;s deceased husband&a mp;#39;s be st friend and director of Actors Thea tre for the Deaf, to offer Pe g a new r omantic intere st, and th ankfully sh e rebukes his protestati ons of love . Altho ugh his opinion may be influen ced by his `c rush&# 39;, Dan tells P eg that b eing diff erent i s better than being normal, since the norma l ones are as `common as weeds& #39;. This phi losophy reads as r ather Niet zschean, o n the le vel of artists not being r estricte d to the com mon moral co de. Direct or Kare n Arthur ei ther has t hose sign ing also speaking or t hose sign ing being tr anslated for the aud ience, though in one scene the sound of l apping waves d rowns out the dialogue b etween Dan and Peg. She also gives Matlin some go od moments, one be ing her scream of horror when she hear s the news of the death of her husband , and an other w hen she chases Remick do wn a fli ght of st eps, h itting h er.詳情
