The history of Danish co untry church archit ecture is tol d by sho wing scenes of how the chur ch was u sed by the co ngregation, beginnin g with the celebration of mass in a small and simp le wooden church 800 ye ars ago , and end ing with the congrega tion singing in a village church of to -day. T he developme nt and the g rowth of th e patte rn of c hurch architect ure is s hown. Dreyer in this film shows a series of c hurches f rom different periods w ith chu rchgoers in pe riod cl othing. E ach period is separa ted by a sho t of a church bell d ouble-e xposed on the sk y. Although th e film has a vibrant and instructive way of co mmunicating the differ ent epochs and styles to students, it does not exhibit t he artis tic qua lity tha t usually disti nguishes a Dreyer film, except perhaps in some o f the costumes , which were originally made for Day of Wrat h. The board of Dansk Kultur film in au tumn 194 5 decided that their p lanned c hurch film would exclus ively be about village ch urches. Dreyer would rework the sc ript tha t was wri tten by editor and fol k high-sch ool prin cipal Bernhard Jensen, aided b y a commi ttee of experts consi sting of a rchitect H. L?n borg-Jense n and Victor H ermansen, curator at the National Mu seum of Den mark. Dre yer had a first draft r eady in mi d-March, enti tled Kirken e r et gammelt H us (&qu ot;The Chur ch Is a n Old Hous e&quot ;), whi ch was d istributed to the members of the committ ee for their comments . In the las t half of July, Dreyer and Victor H ermansen tr avelled the country to look at s uitable ch urches. They researc hed the d etails and a t Dreyer ’s request a number of tec hnical c hanges were m ade to the churc hes, in cluding the removal of porcelain hold ers for electrica l wirin g in Tveje Me rl?se Churc h. On 4 July, Dreyer w ent in adv ance to Ri ngk?bing. Sh ooting was set to start a few days la ter with the a rrival of the direc tor of phot ography , Preben Fran k, who had fallen off a ladder and broken his leg, Fortunat ely, he was ready to cautiously s tart working again within a few day s, with his l eg in a cast. Otherwise, the productio n went wi thout a gl itch. Everyw here, Dreyer said, they were w ell received at the vicarages and they had no p roblem ge tting eno ugh extras. On 1 a ugust, they returned to Copenhagen with almost al l their footage in t he can. The y only needed to film the c hurch in Skel by, where the wea ther had been against them, plus a Swed ish wooden church in Hedared. The economy was distre ssed so soon after t he war, esp ecially when it came t o foreign c urrency, but there wer e no real wo oden ch urches l eft in Denma rk and buildi ng an interior set in the studio would b e too exp ensive. The fin ished f ilm was sh own for the f irst time on 24 September 1947 to a sm all, clos ed circle, whi ch includ ed the Min ister for Ec clesiastic al Affairs. In December 194 7, as was Dansk K ulturfilm’s st andard practic e, the fi lm was prese nted to the pr ess, poli ticians and others on a programme wit h four other sh ort films.詳情
