The story concerns Joz ef Malesa, the mason or bricklayer of the t itle. He was o nce the darling of t he party, the son of two old pa rty activis ts, a worker of her oic reputa tion, his own commit ment to The Mov ement u nquesti oned. He was chosen to b e destined for great t hings, specia lly educated and pushed forward to positions of respon sibility in the Party. E ventually he decides, beca use of the eth ical pressures which he feels from t he obstruction ism of the bureaucrac y from above, he asks to ret urn to be a simp le bric klayer. He is di sturbed wit h the way the Party deals w ith peop le, espec ially their lack of direct contact. He thinks worke rs know better t han the l eadership many times but that&#39 ;s not the way pow er flows. He is uncomf ortable w ith the compro mises to hi s idealism. H e remains committed t o social justice and jo ins his fr iends for t he May Day rall y where his c omfort a nd confid ence in his pla ce in soci ety cause hi m to defer t o no man, cer tainly no rat faced m en in overcoats with red arm bands.
