Beginning just after the bloody Sioux victory over General Custer at Little Big Horn, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee intertwines the perspectives of three characters: Charles East man (Beach), né Ohiy esa, a youn g, Dar tmouth-educated , Sioux doctor held up as livin g proof of the alleged succ ess of as similation; Sitting Bull (S chellenber g), the proud Lakota ch ief who refuse s to submit to U.S. government policies designe d to strip his people of their identit y, their di gnity a nd thei r sacred land – the gol d-laden Black Hill s of the D akotas; and Se nator H enry Dawes (Quinn), wh o was one of the architect s of the govern ment policy o n Indian affairs. While Eastman and patrician schoolteacher E laine Goodale (Paquin) work t o improve life for the Indians on the reserv ation, Senator Dawes lobb ies Preside nt Grant (Thompson) for more human e treatmen t, opposi ng the bel licose stanc e of Gener al William Tecumseh Sherman (Feore) .
