Beginning just after the bloody Sioux victory over General Custer at Little Big Horn, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee intertwines the perspectives of three characters: Charles East man (Beach ), né Ohiye sa, a youn g, Dartmouth- educated, Si oux doctor held up as liv ing proof of th e alleged succe ss of assimil ation; Sitting Bull (Sche llenberg), the proud Lak ota chief who refu ses to submit t o U.S. gov ernment polic ies desi gned to s trip his people of their identity, t heir dign ity and their s acred lan d – the gold-lad en Black Hi lls of the Dakotas; and Senator Henr y Dawes (Q uinn), who w as one of the archite cts of the gov ernment po licy on Ind ian affairs. While Eas tman and p atrician sc hoolteac her Elaine Goodale (Paqui n) work to i mprove life for t he Indians o n the reserva tion, Senato r Dawes lobbies Pre sident Grant (Thompson) for more humane treatmen t, oppo sing the belli cose stance of General W illiam Tec umseh Sherm an (Feore). Hope rise s for th e Indian s in the f orm of the prophet W ovoka (Stud i) and the Gho st Dance – a messianic m ovement that promises an end of their s uffering under th e white man. This hope is ob literat ed after the as sassination o f Sitting Bull and the ma ssacre o f hundreds of Ind ian men, wome n and c hildren by the 7th Cav alry at Wounded Knee Creek on D ec. 29, 1890.
