Former police d etective Ad rian Mon k (Tony Shalhoub), who se photographi c memory an d amazing abil ity to pi ece togethe r tiny clue s made him a local le gend, ha s suffer ed from in tensified obsessi ve-compulsive disorder and a variety of phobias s ince the unsolved murd er of his wife, Trudy, in 199 7. Now on psychiatri c leave from the S an Francisco Police Departm ent and working as a freelance detective/ consulta nt on difficult cases, Monk hopes to convi nce his former boss, Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Le vine), to allow him to return to the force. Stottle meyer, who wavered between admiration fo r Monk an d annoy ance at his eccentri cities d uring the f irst seas on, is becomi ng more of a friend to Monk as the series develops, frequentl y calling hi m in to h elp, as much for Monk& amp;#39;s be nefit as for his own. However, he know s Monk& amp;#39;s limi tations as well as hi s strengths a nd may st ill harbor doubts about the wisdom of allow ing Monk to carry a gun or su bdue a perpet rator. Stottlem eyer' s second-i n-command, Lieutenant Ra ndall Di sher (Jason Gr ay-Stanford), also seems t o be developin g both admirat ion and comp assion for t he man he on ce labele d & quot;the defective detecti ve.& ;quot; Despite flaws and inadequacie s all around, the three are becomi ng an increasin gly effect ive team, with additi onal help fr om Monk&a mp;#39; s personal a ssistan t. But in the tenth episode of the third seaso n, Sha rona was r eplaced by a new assi stant, Nat alie Teeger (Traylor H oward).
