Former po lice detec tive Adr ian Monk ( Tony Shalhoub) , whose photogr aphic memory a nd amazi ng ability to p iece tog ether tin y clues made him a local lege nd, has suffe red from inten sified obse ssive-compul sive dis order a nd a var iety of phobias since t he unsolve d murder of his wife, Tru dy, in 1997. N ow on psych iatric leave f rom the San F rancisco Police Departme nt and working as a freelance detec tive/ consult ant on diffic ult cas es, Monk hopes to convin ce his f ormer bo ss, Captai n Leland Stottl emeyer ( Ted Levine), to allow him to retu rn to the fo rce. Stottlemey er, who wa vered betwe en admirati on for Monk and a nnoyance a t his eccentr icities during the firs t season, is becoming mor e of a frien d to Monk as the serie s develops , freque ntly calling him in t o help, as much for Monk&a mp;#39;s benefi t as fo r his own. How ever, he knows Monk 's limi tations as well as his strengths a nd may still h arbor doub ts about the wisdom o f allowing Monk to carry a gun or subdue a perpe trator. Stottlemeyer& amp;#39;s seco nd-in-com mand, Li eutenant Randall Dis her (Jason G ray-Stanford), also seems to be developin g both admira tion and compassion fo r the man he once labele d &quo t;the defective detecti ve.&quo t; Despite flaws and inad equacies all a round, the thre e are becomin g an inc reasingly effe ctive team, with add itional hel p from Mon k&#39 ;s persona l assistan t. From the double-epis ode pilot t hrough the fir st half of seas on three, Monk was ai ded by his nurs e, Sharona Fle ming (Bitty Sch ram). But in t he tenth e pisode of the t hird season, Sharona was replaced by a new assistant, Natali e Teeger (T raylor Howar d). Lik e Sharon a, a divorcee with a s on named Benjy, Natal ie is a single parent, a widow wi th a daught er named Jul ie (Emmy Cla rke).
