Former police detective Ad rian Monk (Tony Shalhoub ), whose photo graphic m emory and amazing ability to piec e together tiny clues mad e him a local legend, has suf fered from inte nsified obs essive- compulsive di sorder and a variety of p hobias since the unsolved murder of hi s wife, Tr udy, i n 1997. Now on psychi atric leave fr om the Sa n Francisco Pol ice Department and wor king as a f reelance detec tive/ consulta nt on diffi cult cases, Monk hopes to convince h is former boss, Cap tain Leland St ottlemey er (Ted Levine ), to allow h im to return to the force. Stottlemey er, who wavere d betwee n admira tion for Monk and an noyance at his eccent ricities during the first sea son, is b ecoming more of a frien d to Monk as the series develops, frequentl y calling h im in to help , as much fo r Monk&# 39;s bene fit as for his own. But in the tenth e pisode of the t hird seaso n, Sha rona was repl aced by a ne w assist ant, Natalie Teeger (Tr aylor Howard ). Like Shar ona, a divorcee with a son nam ed Benjy, Nat alie is a s ingle pa rent, a w idow with a da ughter nam ed Julie (Emmy Clarke ).
