Former polic e detectiv e Adrian Mo nk (Tony S halhoub ), whose photog raphic me mory and amazi ng ability t o piece togethe r tiny cl ues made him a local legend, has suf fered from i ntensified obsessive -compuls ive disord er and a variet y of pho bias since th e unsolve d murder of his w ife, Trudy , in 1997. Now on psychia tric leave from the S an Francis co Police Department an d working as a fr eelance dete ctive/ consultan t on dif ficult cases , Monk ho pes to con vince his former boss, Capta in Leland Sto ttlemeyer (Ted Levine ), to allow hi m to return to the force . Stottlemey er, wh o waver ed between admiration for Monk and annoyance at h is eccentri cities during the first se ason, is becoming mor e of a friend to Monk as the series develops, fr equently calling him in to help, as much for M onk's benefit as for his ow n. However, he knows Mo nk's limitat ions as well a s his s trength s and may s till harbor do ubts abo ut the wisdom of allowing Monk to ca rry a gun or subdue a perp etrator. Stott lemeyer&am p;#39;s second- in-command, Lieutena nt Randall Disher (Ja son Gray-Stanfo rd), also seems to be de veloping bo th admira tion an d compassion for the man he once labeled &quo t;the defe ctive detective .&q uot; Despite flaws an d inadequacies all around, the three a re becoming a n increasin gly effective t eam, with ad ditiona l help from Monk& #39;s pers onal as sistant. From t he double- episode pilot through the first half of season three, Mon k was aided by his n urse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram ). But in the t enth episo de of the th ird season, Sh arona was re placed by a new as sistant, Na talie Teeger (Traylor Ho ward). Li ke Sharona, a divorce e with a son named B enjy, Natali e is a sing le parent, a widow wi th a da ughter nam ed Julie (E mmy Clarke) .
